Meet Alani

Surrendered to Safe Haven due to having too many cats to move with, Alani was surrendered with her 2 six-month-old kitties who are in the process of being adopted.

Alani is a lovely half Maine Coon/half Long Haired Tabby. She is only a year and a half old and was happy to be weaned from her kittens. At-risk kitties grow up too fast. Most never enjoy a kittenhood because they become mothers as early as 6 months of age.

When Alani was very young, she was stepped on. She’s now recovered but she did lose some of the peripheral vision in her left eye. This hasn’t stopped her from enjoying every day to its fullest.

This lovely petite female enjoys being petted and played with. She would prefer to be an only kitty because she enjoys a clean litter box of her own.

Alani loves attention and she’s sure to blossom in a loving home. Maybe she’ll even be able to enjoy a second childhood, since she missed out on her first one.

It’s Alani’s time now. She’s finished her motherhood experience and now she wants to be someone’s special someone. Call our shelter at 207-646-1611 or apply online here.

Got a Match?

Safe Haven has 2 matching gift campaigns currently running. Our Critical Cat Care drive matches donations up to $18,500. We’ve raised $12,000 so far.

A new matching gift fundraiser for our Kitten Fund has been created thanks to an anonymous donor’s $5,000 contribution.

Why a kitten fund? Safe Haven needs to care for more than 120 kittens — that’s the current estimate to be rescued and brought into our care.

Our volunteer trappers are reaching out to rural communities, helping residents overloaded with cats, and getting them spayed and neutered. Any mother cat and kittens are taken in by us as well as any pregnant cat or ill cat.

Donations to either fund can be mailed to Safe Haven, PO Box 91, Wells, ME 04090 or donate online here. Thanks!

Need a workout? We can help!

Saturdays from 12-3pm our shop receives donations. Half must be carried up to our 3rd floor to be prepped, sorted and priced. Now we are without our college student team that helped us every Saturday. Now they’ve graduated and gone back home.

We urgently need several strong people willing to help for 2-3 hours on Saturday afternoons to carry donations up to our 3rd floor. It’s a good workout and healthy, athletic people tell us it’s a great way to train.

If you or someone you know can help us, please call 207-229-8314. We also welcome community service and families with adult children who want to help us.

We can no longer accept large furnishings, winter clothing and Christmas items. We welcome in-season clothing, linens, home décor, art, non-battery toys, craft supplies, antiques and anything vintage. Also bookcases, trunks, side tables, benches, stools, and furnishings — as long as 2 people can easily carry them.

Thanks so much!

Early this year, at the end of a long hard day, a cat in critical condition was brought to Safe Haven and surrendered by its owner. The poor cat had been in pain for five full days with a blockage in her colon.

We had to immediately rush her to the emergency vet to save her life.

This 3-year-old female, named Quinne, was hospitalized for several days and nights, then needed further diagnostics until well. The emergency vet bill for Quinne cost Safe Haven more than $7,000.

Now fully recovered, happy and beautiful, Quinne is ready for adoption.

To maintain her healthy condition, Quinne requires twice-daily medication. Safe Haven will pay for it, if you cannot afford it. She has gotten used to receiving her meds and, once her new family works with her, she will easily adjust and be cooperative.

She is also a bit “roly-poly,” so she’s on a dry food diet to help her shed those unwanted ounces. We are happy that we were able to save Quinne, and that she can live a long, healthy life with a little extra care.

Quinne is a lovely kitty with blue eyes and a silvery/buff/tan coat and a gorgeous face. Quinne is everything you could ask for in a kitty. She’s beautiful, sweet, affectionate, playful and friendly.

Now she’s in perfect health and ready to enjoy a loving home with the right person or family. She loves to be near you. This is a grateful kitty who enjoys life and the closeness of people.

Quinne will jump right into your lap and stay there to be snuggled and talked to. She loves to play with wand toys, catnip toys and balls. She even entertains herself, by tossing her own toys into the air, then chasing it. What an intelligent kitty!

To meet Quinne and apply to adopt her, please go online to www.safehavenhumanesociety.org.

Big thanks to the Weekly Sentinel and all our supporters for making Safe Haven’s Annual Kitty Shower on May 17 such a vibrant and successful event! Lots of photos on our Facebook. Seems everyone had fun, and the kittens ended up taking naps, with us all watching them sleep and adoring them.

What’s next? Well, we are still running our CCC (Critical Cat Care) Matching Donation campaign to help us continue to save the lives of at-risk kitties like Quinne.

Imagine if we had said no, we couldn’t afford to accept her. Quinne would surely have died a painful death. All donations sent to Safe Haven for our CCC Matching Gift will DOUBLE in value, thanks to some of our generous supporters.

We already have raised $11,000 toward our $18,500 goal, so if you’re able, please give generously. Donate at our website or by mail at Safe Haven, PO Box 91, Wells, ME 04090. Thank you for everything!

Our shop is open 7 days a week from 11-4 7 days a week. On Saturdays from 12-3 we accept donations. Please no winter clothing, or Christmas décor and we are no longer able to accept large heavy pieces of furniture as we can not lift it! Questions? 207-229-8314

Tic Tac and Skittles are our featured kitties.

They’re just one year old, a great age. They’re past the kitten phase of jumping into open refrigerators and clawing up your pant leg at feeding time.

Although still basically kittens, they are calmer and less of a worry than a wee one that can climb your drapes faster than you can say, “Has anyone seen the kitten?”

These two precious furbabies arrived at Safe Haven in October from an elderly man who found them as strays, but couldn’t care for them any longer. They’re a lovely brother and sister and look alike with beautiful tiger stripes and white markings.

They are described as purring factories. They produce louder and happier purrs per second than your ordinary cat. Tic Tac is very playful. Skittles plays too, but needs to get to know you first.

Unlike many cats, these two adore belly rubs. Belly rubs are a bonus with cats. Most cats won’t show their bellies long enough to let you tickle or massage them while you baby-talk them. But these two are expert belly rubbing cats. These two darling kitties are ready and waiting for you. Please call 207-646-1611 or apply here.

Our shop at 1784 Post Rd is open 7 days a week from 11-4pm. We welcome donations every Saturday from 12-3pm.

Sadly, our college-age volunteers are graduating and leaving for home, so it will be up to us to handle the donations. Most of us are senior women, so we must stop accepting furniture, unless it’s small and light enough to be carried by 1-2 women.

If you donate clothing, please do not load them into large trash bags. We can’t carry them up 3 flights of stairs to the pricing room. Please put the clothing into smaller, lighter bags.

We also need some strong young arms and backs, to replace our student volunteers. We’re looking for help on Saturdays from 12-3pm to work with us receiving donations and moving them to the third floor. Please contact 207-229-8314. Thank you!

Food and Supply Drive

It’s that time of year again. Safe Haven is rescuing many pregnant/nursing cats and kittens from local rural properties and colonies. Our team predicts at least 100 kittens will come into our program this way. To afford this, we need your help.

May is our Food and Supply Drive,

Help Wanted

Now that spring is here, you probably want to get out and mingle. Safe Haven has so many volunteer opportunities at our shelter and shop.

We always need more shop volunteers. Currently we’re expanding our cashier teams to be ready for summer. We want at least 4 new volunteers to help with pricing donations and restocking our shelves.

Volunteer applications are right here.

Our trapping and rescue program also needs more volunteers. Our biggest and most urgent need is helping poorly socialized and feral females who are pregnant or nursing kittens.

We need experienced cat lovers who understand the urgency of getting mama cats into a safe environment, with good nutrition and medical care so they can raise healthy babies.

Safe Haven is currently planning on trapping ferals at 2 rural locations. That will require more community support: volunteers, kitten food, gas cards and foster homes. To learn more about our trapping and rescue program, please call Kathy at 207-251-1789.

Thank you for your interest. We really look forward to working with you!

Love our shop? Would you like to get a 20% discount on purchases? Become a volunteer!

Right now, we need cashiers and volunteers to work in our clothing department with our department manager. You’ll tag, hang and display the wonderful donated clothing, then watch it fly off our racks and go home with the most wonderful people. Please give Joyce a call at 207-229-8314 or fill out a volunteer application here. Thanks!

Yes you can-can!

Please remember that we collect your redeemable bottles and cans at both our locations. Our shelter at 1420 Post Road has a roomy bottle shed right in the parking lot.

At our shop at 1784 Post Road you can ask for a Clynk bag at checkout, take the bag home and fill it. Then bring it back to us or drop it off at your local Hannaford. Yes, the bag will already have our Clynk tag on it. Just scan it and drop it in the chute.

The funds from your bottles and cans really matter! Yes, it’s only a nickel, but each nickel helps us afford the routine consumable items we need regularly.

Like cat food and litter, paper towels, toilet paper, paper plates, dish detergent, laundry detergent, trash bags and other essential items we often run out of.

Please check the wish list for more items we frequently need. You can drop off these items at either location, and we are very thankful when you do.

If you see a stray dog or cat, please call a No Kill shelter or your local police department. Thank you.

We have more than 100 kitties in our care now. Check them out on our Petfinder page.

Announcements

Safe Haven welcomes volunteers who love cats, have love to share and time to spare. Please apply to volunteer here. You will be amazed at how good it feels to get involved in our No Kill mission.

As our shop continues to thrive, we’re currently seeking several more volunteers to help determine the appropriate price of donations. Volunteers will be taught how to research and price items and mark them to be ready for display in our shop. You’ll work with another volunteer, for 3 hours once a week. Please text 207-229-8314 FMI.

Speaking of shopping, you could buy us something from our Amazon Wish List. Thanks so much for all your support!

Donations of cat food, litter and cleaning supplies are always needed and very welcome. Bring them in during business hours any day of the week.

Are you seeing outdoor cats in your yard? Please don’t turn your back on them. Maine weather shows no mercy to animals living outside. If you know someone who is overwhelmed with cats or may be neglecting their pets, please don’t ignore that. You are that animal’s life link. Every life matters.
