Here’s a recent feature in the Weekly Sentinel
Obie and Danica are two kitties that Safe Haven feels especially protective of, because they endured horrific lives before arriving here.
Obie’s face showed so much despair, pain and fear, he broke everyone’s heart. He had seen and survived the worst of what a feral cat can endure.
Obie had facial wounds, a disease-ravaged ear, several fractured teeth, a tick-infested coat and had a bullet lodged inside him that was causing him pain.
Thanks to your generosity, Safe Haven was able to give Obie everything he needed to heal, including surgeries on his ear and teeth, as well as removal of that bullet.
His facial scars have healed, and he has been professionally groomed. To look at Obie now, you’d think that he was always a loved and pampered cat, rather than a true survivor.
Emotionally, Obie has gained confidence that was hard earned. Thanks to our devoted socializing team, you can now pet and brush Obie.
Obie’s friend, Danica, has her own tragic story of neglect and abuse. At age 2, a man confined her in his dirty garage to be a mouser.
For 12 YEARS, she lived in the rafters, because the garage floor was so filthy, she refused to lay on it.
The owner finally surrendered her and she was brought eventually to Safe Haven. We promised her that we would never let anyone harm her ever again. For the past few months, we’ve been trying to give Danica some of what was taken from her.
Things like soft beds, kind words, healthy food, the right to lie peacefully in the sun, and enjoy the companionship of Obie, and Safe Haven’s devoted volunteer socializers and cat caregivers.
Danica’s progress has been slow. We still cannot touch her, but she no longer runs and hides when we enter the room. She will need much more time and patience to learn to relax.
Obie and Danica have found comfort and familiarity in each other’s presence. They will live out their lives together in a loving forever home — maybe yours?
Both cats are beautiful. Obie is a longhaired cream and white 4-5 year old, who is now in perfect health. Danica is a lovely shorthaired brown tiger. She’s 14, having spent 12 years in that filthy garage. Both kitties are sweet and have shown no aggression.
The best home for them would be with a person or family who is very sensitive to the emotional needs of abused cats. Someone who’s willing to give Danica all the time she needs to chill. That means you will enjoy helping her complete her journey to being socialized.
You’ll be rewarded by their progress becoming more confident and trusting in you. They’ll love a quiet, sunny, comfortable home with lots of windows, maybe bird feeders (they love birdwatching), soft beds and kind words. Soon they’ll become devoted to you and your kindness. As our shop continues to grow, we’re currently enlisting several more volunteers to price donations. Volunteers will be taught how to research and price items and mark them to be ready for display in our shop. You’ll work with another volunteer, for 3 hours once a week. Please text 207-229-8314. Thank you.
Speaking of shopping, you could buy us something from our Amazon Wish List. Thanks so much for all your support!
Donations of cat food, litter and cleaning supplies are always needed and very welcome. Bring them in during business hours any day of the week.
It’s never too late to provide shelter for any outdoor cats you see in your yard. Please don’t turn your back on them. Maine winters show no mercy to cats and kittens outside. If you know someone who is overwhelmed with cats or may be neglecting their pets, please don’t ignore that. You are that animal’s life link. Every life matters. Thank you.
