Wedding proposal benefits Safe Haven

(Feb 2008)  It all started with a box of candy and an engagement ring.

Safe Haven recently received a substantial donation from David Michaels of Massachusetts, who proposed to his fiancée, Amy Cohen, at Harbor Candy on Rt. 1 in Ogunquit.

A candy store? Isn't that a rather unusual place to sweep a woman off her feet?

David explains:

“Amy and I have always enjoyed indulging ourselves and our chocolate-loving inner children. Harbor Candy is typically the first and last stop on our annual trip to Ogunquit.”

So David knew this was where he wanted to pop the question. But how?

“Harbor Candy staff members made an exceptional effort to help facilitate my plan.

"They understood what was in store for my soon-to-be fiancée and were discreet albeit giddy. They tolerated the hired violinist, and even went so far as to create a candy shell and "samples" where I could hide the ring.

"The plan worked flawlessly. Amy was stunned and swept away by the moment, as was I.”

David and Amy wanted to share their joy by making a donation to a worthy cause.

Harbor Candy owner Jean Foss (a Safe Haven board member) and her wonderful staff told David that Safe Haven Humane Society was their charitable organization of choice.

So the happy couple made a donation in their name, and wished us good luck with our NO KILL mission.

Thank you, David and Amy! May you enjoy years of happiness (and lots of candy) together!
